Lights Low 02:47
Lights Low For Bill Callahan and Will Oldham's voices after listening to their version of Cat Steven's Blackness of the Night Oct 02. 2020 With love from Cecilie Anna Set the lights low, baby Feel the fire in the night In this quiet, lovely light Falling ashes from the fight Set the lights low, baby In this quiet, lovely light Burning ashes from the fight Set the lights low, baby When the storms are ending Crows gather ‘round your path II: Singing hazy songs of sorrow With letters from your past When the storms are ending :II I lost my senses I feel you ramble I lost my joy I feel you stumble When the crows are dancing In the early morning rain And the blackness of the night Comes fresh in from the fight Take this broken land, baby And the blackness of our lives Comes pouring down our spines Take this broken land, baby Quiet, lovely light

Bout the Crows For Bill Callahan and Will Oldham's voices after listening to their cover of Heather Summer's Red Tailed Hawk Nov 06. 2020 With love from Cecilie Anna Fall – I would fall again I’d fall into your arms I would fall like September Falls into December When you’re in love And speak I will speak again I’ll never let you go Just like springtime in Denver All through September I’ll have you know: I will Sing my heart out I will Steal your show I will Always remember What you told me ‘Bout the crows I will Still remember What you told me ‘Bout the crows Warm I feel warm again I’m warmer than before When we come to October I’ll be sober Again And hearts I’ll play hearts again I’ll play it in the dark To the end of December I’ll still remember Your name

October Sings Again Inspired by Anne Gjerstad's voice placed inside Bruce Springsteen's musical universe, for him to sing aswell October sings again I feel left out And all my friends have moved I’m moving too, I guess I’m moving too, I guess I’ve had these thoughts/dreams of love I’ve loved before I never felt so free I’m never free alone I’m never free alone Dark winds have filled my heart for some time I’m cold, I’ve never been so alone I see your face when I go to sleep It’s never more than that November strikes again I drift away I’ll go to Freehold now I’ll see you at the fair I’ll see you at the fair Dark winds have filled my heart for some time I’m cold, I’ve never been so alone I see your face when I go to sleep It’s never more than that December bold and strong I’m not afraid I’ll have another drink And sing, my love, ‘till dawn I’ll sing, my love, ‘till dawn
4.
Follow You Inspired by Endre Olsen singing “Take Care of All My Children” by Tom Waits When the night falls and I Lay my head to rest And the sky turns so weak And falls into the night I have done all I can to follow you Cause from your heart A light shines on me When the roars of our times Lean against my door And all I see are tears From a different sky above I have done all I can to follow you Cause from your heart A light shines on me

Before I Go 03:37
Before I Go For Will Oldham and Bill Callahan’s voices after having heard their cover of Dave Rich’s I’ve made up my mind Oct 16. 2020 With love from Cecilie Anna Long the rope between us Long the winding road Jesus tighten all my knots I see you before I go Silence I bet you’ll get me Silence Fills up my row Silence I will remember To see you before I go Long the thoughts between us Long beyond these shores Moving in the shifting light I’ll see you before I go And when I see you That’s when I know Lonely is all I can handle right now But I’ll see you again somehow

Low Clouds 01:45
Low Clouds For Will Oldham’s voice Made at a restaurant looking at the mountains in Crete July 29.2019 With love from Cecilie Anna How the low clouds make me feel Oh, mountain dresser Oh, mind suppresser There will always be Something left unseen Something left for me Oh, mountain dresser Oh, mind suppresser When there’s lightening in the air In your cape with bolts and flares Oh mountain dresser Oh, mind suppresser Where will I go

Hommage 03:25
The soul of Will Oldham's song, I See a Darkness, having walked all the way over to Cecilie Anna, taking off Will's coat, putting on Cecilie Anna's Hommage You see me now Now, that I am here Dressed in your stardom Beauty of the rocks I fall through my language Hørre du meg no? I, who lean my days on mountains unseen And walk before doors, my heart starts to recall All the lonely evenings, all the stuff I felt Unanswered letters Falling through the night Like stars for no one, stars for no one Do you know how your voice sounds Crashing through the garden? Crashing in my garden Will, I hope you will remember This light from my room Trembling in the night Trembling tonight I know you too would have listened If the mountain sang to you And the stone whispered still And the land lifted you Glowing rocks arising Leaving to the sky By the starlit mountain My starlit mountain I go out in the garden To the rocks of your voices Lighting up my heart

Thoughts On The Back of a Horse (for Bill Callahan's voice) Never saw you like this before Riding gently, hair to your side I love your back and your quiet light These winter times Oh love, stay quiet with me Let's not smoke cigarettes together anymore Let's not argue about the old lovely stuff Just falling snow in your hair Riding along in these winter times I love your back and your quiet light I found a new path now How can I get back up on that old horse again Forcing my road No peace but solitude And my restless heart for you Oh love, oh love Oh love, stay quiet with me Let's not smoke cigarettes together anymore Let's not argue about the old lovely stuff Just falling snow in your hair Riding along in these winter times Together, alone, oh I love you so Oh when we're together Forcing my road Sun scratching my eye Your hair to your side Your hair to your side I love your back and your quiet light in these winter times Oh love, stay quiet with we Let's not smoke cigarettes together anymore Let's not argue about the old lovely stuff Just falling snow in your hair I found a new path now Never saw you like this before Riding gently Hair to your side I love your back and your quiet light In these winter times These winter times In these winter times These winter times

Nightingale 02:45
The Nightingale (poem by James Lyons) Oh, singer to the dreaming world Shy minstrel of the brooding night, The liquid notes in rapture pour; Sing on! Sing on! The pale moonlight Grows warmer – deeper – than before A glamour steals o’er fragrant woods, And o’er each misty hill and fell, That wrapped in silence stands alone; Sing on! Sing on! Nor break the spell Thy magic voice has o’er me thrown The haunting memories hark me back, Thy voice recalls what time hath dimmed, I thread the path of former years; Sing on! Thy song in rapture hymned Hath touched the hidden fount of tears

I See a Darkness (Song by Will Oldham, modified by Cecilie Anna) I was walking And all around me I could feel you Well you’re my friend And can you see Many times we’ve been out drinking Many times we’ve shared our thoughts But did you ever, ever notice The kind of thoughts I got Well, you know I have a love A love for everyone I know And you know I have a drive To live I won’t let go But can you see it’s opposition Comes a-rising up sometimes That it’s dreadful and position Comes blacking in my mind And that I see a darkness, that I see a darkness Did you know how much I love you Is a hope that somehow you you Can save me from this darkness Will I hope that someday, buddy We have peace in our lives Together or apart Alone or with our wives How big is the skies For someone like us And pull the smiles inside I was always like this And never go to sleep The rythm of your blood In my heart This isn’t all I see Hidden from me From you No I see a darkness No I see a darkness Did you know how much I love you Is a hope that somehow you-you No I see a darkness No I see a darkness Did you know how much I love you Is a hope that somehow you you Can save me from this darkness

about

About Hommage County

For my friend Leo Meijer. Thank you for your support and your kind words through the years. Love, CA

A Hommage is a respectful imitiation of another artist’s work.

It’s been thirteen years since Cecilie Anna wrote her first songs for Bill Callahan and Will Oldham’s voices. Tom Waits, Mark Lanegan and Joe Henry adds to the list of singing voices Cecilie Anna adores to the point that they stay in her head, in a positive way, contributing to the writing of songs that will suit their voices like gloves.

After spending some years wondering how to get the gloves sent to the right hands, Cecilie Anna recorded “Morning Star” (for Bill Callahan) and “Old Love” (for Joe Henry) on her record “I’m Here” (2017). “Hommage County” is a continuance of this gesture, providing the songs a fair chance to fly ashore where they belong and somehow originated from.

Endre Olsen is a friend and fellow artist from Stord. Anne Gjerstad is not an artist but she’s a friend, and to Cecilie Anna, their two voices align with the rest of the voices. All freed from status, gender, time, and place.

In 2010, Cecilie Anna heard Bill Callahan’s song “Too Many Birds”. She listened to it again and again and has never stopped.

Cecilie Anna went to one of Will Oldham (a.k.a Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy)’s concerts in Bergen 2010. She was immediately hit by a strong sense of wordless significance. The following night she made her first song for his voice.

Many years went by, and when Will Oldham and Bill Callahan started releasing covers together in 2020, Cecilie Anna’s head nearly exploded. The day she listened to their version of Cat Steven’s “Blackness of the Night”, she made “Lights Low”. Not only does it pay tribute to their voices, it’s also a hommage to Cat Steven’s song telling the story of a young soldier lying dying on the battlefield in a war not of his own. Listening to Bill Will’s take on Dave Rich’s “I’ve Made Up My Mind”, Cecilie Anna had to turn it off after 1:30 because she was already making her “Before I Go”, and her song “Bout the Crows” was written after hearing Bill Will’s take on Heather Summer’s “Red Tailed Hawk” for the first time.

As Cecilie Anna decided to make a compilation of hommages, her first thought was for Bill Callhan to have another song for his voice and made “Bring This to Bill”. She also wanted to do a cover of Will Oldham’s “I See a Darkness” and did what she always does cover-wise: Find a different version inside the song making new chords and a new melody but keeping the original lyrics intact. After recording it, Cecilie Anna wrote new lyrics. She had now changed the original song’s chords, melody, and lyrics, making the transition of the soul of “I See a Darkness” complete, from Will Oldham to Cecilie Anna. Bringing her back to the concert thirteen years ago, “Hommage” has made the very same wordless significance audible to the world.

Arrangements
For Hommage County, Cecilie Anna wanted something different for the arrangement. She’d done two piano-records and one with band and wanted to do something in between. Since she is a keyboardist, she chose pump organ as the base. She’s never played it before and enjoyed the exploration of a new instrument. She also wanted soundscapes made from analogue sounds for the tracks to be surrounded by. Her husband Vidar was asked if he could record sounds. Any sounds, really, and he recorded such as electrical toothbrush, stamping of a chair, jingle bells, closing of drawers, rain staff and others. Cecilie Anna then began exploring and voyaged herself into heavy manipulation of the sounds, so heavily she no longer can tell for sure where all of them came from. One of her favourites, though, which has been used on several of the tracks, is jingle bells slowed down so heavily that she could pick just one of the ‘plucks’ moving it up and down and placing it manually to mimic the pizzicato of strings. At the same time, you can hear it’s something else, because of the wind inside the bell being audible. The track “Hommage” consists entirely from these plucks and it took Cecilie Anna several months to finish the work of placing all of the notes individually, not only tone wise but timewise.
The deepest of all sounds on the record is Cecilie Anna's own voice singing a word in a very low key in a very slow tempo.
